Author Jodi Wilson Shares 5 Things She's Loving Right Now
A hydration trick, two novels, a feminist crime parody, and her favourite tea!
Jodi Wilson is a mother of four and the author of two books, Practising Simplicity and The Complete Australian Guide to Pregnancy and Birth. She and her family live in NW Tasmania where they settled after travelling around Australia in a caravan and learning lots of lessons along the way.
In addition to writing books, she also has a Substack newsletter, which she sends out weekly, and you can also find her on Instagram, where she shares 5 tips for practising simplicity every Sunday (I look forward to this post each week!).
While we've never met in real life, Jodi and I have had an online friendship for years, bonding over motherhood, travel and sharing online. I recently interviewed her, and she shared beautiful insights on motherhood, finding calm amongst the chaos and, of course, tips for practising simplicity. (Click here to listen to this interview!)
Below, she shares five things she's loving right now...
1. Meyer lemons squeezed into water. I walk the dog every day - along the beach and through the small town we live in in NW Tasmania - and there's a few lemon trees along the way so I return home and drink a big glass of lemon water. Instant hydration!
2. Substack. A very small proportion of substack writers are based in Australia (only 3%) but it feels like a wonderful platform for writers to share their work and be supported by subscribers. I write full time so I consider my weekly newsletter my 'fun' writing time and it stretches me creatively which is always a good thing (as is the deadline).
3. A really good book. I'm a big reader - it's one of my non-negotiables because it always brings me joy. Studies show that reading for merely six minutes slows your heart rate and relieves tension so as well as inspiring me, I consider it good for my health. I'm currently reading a pile of books for research but I reserve fiction for bedtime reading, currently devouring Lioness by Emily Perkins, which is clever and perceptive and I am Homeless If This Is Not My Home by Lorrie Moore - both suggestions from WellRead.
4. My hot water bottle. Heat is healing and in mid-winter, there is nothing more grounding or soothing than going to bed early, a cup of herbal tea (pukka elderberry + echinacea is a favourite), a good book and a hot water bottle.
5. Deadloch, a feminist crime parody set in Tasmania. The 8-part series is a celebration of small town Tasmania and is both heartfelt and laugh-out-loud funny, despite the fact that it centres on a serial killer.
I hope you feel as inspired as I do after reading Jodi's list. I'm currently drinking lemon water as I type, I have subscribed to her Substack, and I know what show Michael and I will be watching next...!
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Courtney x
