Emily McMaster Shares 5 Things She's Loving Right Now
Gardening clogs, a stop-you-in-your-tracks perfume, a Netflix series and a novel that will leave you feeling sentimental about the passage of time
Emily McMaster is the founder and creative eye behind one of my very favourite children's brands, Mabo. Some of my most special memories of my children when they were babies and toddlers include a Mabo outfit - whether it was a special pinafore dress, an adorable romper, or the softest organic cotton pyjamas! In fact, it was always an organic cotton Mabo onesie that I put on my babies in the hospital the day they were born! They are so special and timeless and just the absolute cutest.
Emily is a mother of three daughters and she lives with her family in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she has a little brick and mortar shop next door to the wood fired pizza restaurant her husband owns. Not only does she sell her beautiful brand, but she has a thoughtfully curated collection of beautiful brands for women, and everything, honestly everything, is so beautiful!
She's become a friend over the last 14 years since she launched her brand and our paths crossed through the Babyccino platform. Emily is effortlessly cool, she's a wonderful mother and an inspiring businesswoman. I was so happy she agreed to share five things she's loving right now (Michael and I also loved 'Baby Reindeer' - and I have that book on my bedside table to read next!)
Here are her five things….
1. Gardening/doctor clogs from Italy that one of my Mabo team member’s doctor dad wears (similar to these). My teens and I have been sharing them, they’re really comfy and fun.
2. I had built such a nice collection of gold necklaces with charms and last year at yoga I lost them when I took them all off and put them next to my mat. Devastating! So I’m slowly rebuilding a collection and I'm starting with some of these Catbird charms.
3. I binged the series Baby Reindeer this week and haven’t been glued to something like that for awhile. It’s dark and unsettling but really well done and I keep thinking about it. I don’t get much time to binge shows these days (we tend to watch shows with our teens and everyone’s on different schedules so we end up not finishing a lot of series) and it was so fun to dive into something for a few days.
4. I climbed in a friend's car a few weeks ago and was instantly hit with the most amazing perfume. The next couple hours that I was with her I kept getting whiffs of it and made her send me a pic of the bottle after she got home. Looks like they’re on a break but I’m hoping to get it in our shop.
5. I just finished reading Northwoods and loved it. It sounds dry with this description, but tracks a house/land over centuries of its inhabitants and is a lovely deliberation of history, the passage of time, nature, and so much more. Each section is written in a different voice. It took me awhile to read because each section is an entirely new cast of characters, but I felt so satisfied and sentimental about the fleeting nature of time when I finished it.
** Earlier this year I interviewed Emily and we chatted about motherhood, growing a family while also growing a business, and juggling allllll the things. Such a candid chat! This conversation is available to watch here, along with so many other inspiring conversations.
