Recommendations from readers -- books, podcasts, TV series
I recently started a chat thread and here's what people are loving right now
Last Friday I started a chat thread here on Substack (I’m new to this, so hopefully I did it correctly!). I asked people to introduce themselves and share what books, podcasts or TV series they’ve loved lately. How fun, right?!
I have written down a long list of recommendations to check out, and below I thought I’d share what intrigued me the most.
Amy recommended the book, Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar, saying ‘It’s one of those books that stops you in your tracks. Like, grab a highlighter type situation.’ I love a highlighter type of situation. :)
Katie recommended Madwoman by Chelsea Bieker saying ‘If you liked All Fours, it’s similar…but heavier…and better!’
Gillian recommended watching Somebody Somewhere saying ‘best TV we've seen in a very long time!’. I watched the trailer and it looks so sweet (Michael was just saying last night that he wants another feel-good show like Ted Lasso. Maybe this is it.)
Sara recommended the Feel Better Live More podcast with Dr. Chatterjee, particularly the episode with professional skier, Hedvig Wessel, and the interview with Dr. Emily Leeming on gut health.
A few people recommended The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett. Sounds interesting!
Kimberley recommended The Salt Path by Raynor Winn, saying it was ‘moving and very evoking if you’ve ever been to Cornwall.’ (We have been to Cornwall and we loved it!) I just saw this book is being made into a film too.
Sara recommended The Vegetarian by Han Kang. It’s received so many awards — I’m definitely intrigued.
This wasn’t in the chat thread… but my mum keeps recommending the show Shrinking, so it’s on my list of things to watch. Have you seen it?
Please check out the thread and share what you’ve been reading/watching/listening to!

One of my best friends is Chelsea Bieker! I know I’m biased but she is truly such a talented writer. All of her books are so, so powerful. Beautiful and poignant on a sentence level, the voices so strong- characters just come to life off the page-they stick with you for a long time. The way she writes the whole truth too- the dark, the funny, and the plots propel you forward. You’ll love Madwoman. Check out Godshot, her first novel, and Heartbroke, her short story collection also!
Shrinking is a win! If you've watched Ted Lasso 3 times and feel almost shameful about doing a fourth, this is a good variation!. Laugh out loud, cry a little, real truth bombs type of goodness
