Video Tutorial: Decorating your home with art

I walk you through our home and share some of the art on our walls with tips on how to display art and what to look for

Art is one of the best ways to decorate and personalise your home. I love when homes have lots of art on the walls - I think it says so much about the people or person who lives there. While art can be expensive, it certainly doesn't need to be -- some of my favourite art has come from op shops, flea markets or vintage art dealers on Etsy.

In the video above, I walk you through our home and share some tips for displaying and hanging art on your walls. I also share some of my favourite pieces and why I love them. And below I share 5 tips for displaying art in your home...

5 Tips for Decorating your Home with Art:

  1. Hang artwork at eye level: Hanging art too high is a common mistake many people make. When art is hung too high, it can feel disconnected from the rest of the room and can make it difficult to fully appreciate the piece. A good rule of thumb is to hang artwork at eye level, which is typically around 57-60 inches (144-153 cm) from the floor to the centre of the artwork. This ensures that the art is easily viewable and creates a comfortable viewing experience for most people. (When you’re hanging art over a sofa, or next to a bed, or above a wardrobe, it may be more important to hang your piece according to the hight of the furniture, rather than at eye level.)

  2. Balance and Symmetry: Maintain balance in your arrangement, whether it's with symmetrical or asymmetrical placement. For symmetrical arrangements, ensure equal spacing between each piece and try to align the top or bottom of the frames, or if your pieces are very different in size, you can align from the centre of each piece. For asymmetrical arrangements, balance the visual weight of each piece within the space on the wall. (It’s always good to experiment with different layouts or arrangements to find the one you like best.)

  3. Consider Scale: Take into account the scale of your wall and the artwork. A small piece might get lost on a large wall, while a large piece could overwhelm a small space. Aim for a proportional relationship between the art and the wall it's on. Don’t be afraid to explore the potential of small wall spaces; they can be perfect opportunities to add charm and character to every corner of your home.

  4. Grouping Artworks: If you're hanging multiple pieces together, experiment with different arrangements before making any nail holes. Lay them out on the floor or use paper templates on the wall to find the best composition. Don’t be afraid to mix textures and mediums when grouping artworks, and even try to include a variety of different frame materials and dimensions. (I love scouring op shops for art and vintage frames!) You can also look for other forms of art like tapestries, ceramic plates, vintage masks or other types of decorative art pieces.

  5. Personalise Your Space: Above all, choose artwork that speaks to you personally and reflects your taste and personality. Your home should be a reflection of who you are, and artwork is one of the best (and most fun!) ways to personalise your home. You can also include your children’s art in spaces throughout your home - the ultimate one-of-a-kind art!
